The NC State Experience 19 Things You’ll Think and Do at NC State

19 Things You’ll
Think and Do
at NC State

We’ve got 19 things to share — but your possibilities here are endless.

Students walk to class on North Campus at the Brickyard, near the space where Harrelson Hall used to be.

1. Discover Why Our Slogan Is “Think and Do”

NC State is a leading public university with a hands-on focus, which means you’ll learn by doing. We go beyond the classroom to give students real-world experience in their chosen field. You’ll solve problems alongside top faculty and researchers. Whether it’s in a lab, in the field or in the boardroom, you’ll think and do.

2. Explore Raleigh Like a Local

Our campus is in the heart of Raleigh, NC, one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation. We’re walking distance to a bustling downtown and acres of parks. You’ll find restaurants to suit every taste bud and tons of arts, culture and sports, including impressive museums, the Hopscotch Music Festival and the Carolina Hurricanes national hockey team.

3. Take Your Pick of Majors

From accounting to zoology, we’ve got you covered. NC State offers more than 100 majors and 120 minors, so you’ll find the path that’s right for you — and we’ll help you follow it.

Our variety of programs means you can delve into subjects outside of your major and build a customized education experience specific to your interests. Here, a business major can dip their toes into beekeeping, bagpiping and everything in between before graduation.

If you know what you want to study, you can start right away. Students here have the freedom to jump straight into classes within their major — or take the time to explore your options. That means more time working toward your degree and the chance to tailor your classes with a specific focus in mind.

4. Discover Hallowed Spaces on Campus

NC State combines traditional brick and mortar buildings with cutting-edge, futuristic structures. Rooted deep in history, we have spots on campus that have become representative of who we are. We call them Hallowed Spaces. They’re the irreplaceable buildings, landscapes and natural settings that serve as beloved landmarks for NC State students spanning generations.

You’ll discover these spots, each marked with its own plaque, all throughout campus — from the Belltower to the Free Expression Tunnel.

5. Be a Big Fish in a Big Pond

With over 34,000 students, NC State might seem like a big school, but with plenty of events, clubs and activities, you can easily find your community on campus and in the classroom. Eighty-five percent of our classes have fewer than 50 students, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 13 to 1.

6. Find Your Pack in a Student Organization

We have more than 900 of them. Our student organizations include everything from academics to service opportunities to club sports and beyond. Join one of our 52 greek organizations, write for one of our four student publications or take a spin at deejaying with WKNC, one of the nation’s top college radio stations. No matter what you’re interested in, you’ll always be able to find people who share your passions.

7. Get a Jump Start with Pre-Professional Programs

Planning to become a doctor, lawyer or veterinarian? We offer services to keep you on the right track.

Our students have access to advising groups including the Health Professions Advising Center, Pre-Law Services and VetPAC. They’ll pair you with dedicated advisors and help you prepare for your next steps beyond NC State.

Members of our Pre-Veterinary Club build significant experience as undergraduates to ready them for NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine program, ranked third in the nation.

The traditions you discover here will last a lifetime. Whether it’s repping red and white at tailgates, riding a sugar rush during the Krispy Kreme Challenge or attending the ring ceremony at Reynolds, we’re ready to pass on the torch.

Students pack the street for Packapalooza, our all-day street festival filled with activities and live performances from acclaimed musicians, including Grammy-nominated alumna Rhapsody and American Idol star Scotty McCreery.

The entrepreneurial spirit is contagious here. And we supply the resources you need to get your next great idea off the ground. Innovative hubs like our Entrepreneurship Clinic or the eGarage help you make your dreams a reality. NC State startups generate $1.2 billion annually in added income for North Carolina’s economy.

Our students also grow valuable connections with faculty experts, invested alumni and engaged community members that last beyond graduation.

14. Live and Learn Next to Leading Businesses

Adjacent to our main campus, Centennial Campus is home to dozens of partners committed to NC State and its students. From nonprofits to corporate enterprises and government research centers, Centennial provides a unique opportunity for students to work in internships and gain on-the-job experience just walking-distance from class.

15. Root for the Red and White

NC State is home to 23 NCAA Division 1 varsity athletics teams — and our pack runs deep. And if you’d rather be on the field than in the stands, we have 70 intramural and club sports programs for you to join.

17. Collaborate With Award-Winning Faculty

Our faculty represent some of the brightest minds across the academic community. They work across disciplines to conduct groundbreaking research and teach classes you can’t find anywhere else. They’ve solved cold cases, composed symphonies, discovered stars, designed national museums, founded global companies, named Mercurian lava plains and championed lost languages. By working with and learning from the best, NC State students can be on the forefront of original thinking and new discoveries.

18. Join a Diverse Wolfpack

We champion diversity and inclusion efforts so that all members of our community feel welcomed and supported. In addition to programs in Africana, Native American, Women’s and Gender Studies, all NC State students take at least one course focused on diversity and another with an international focus. There are dozens of student organizations and clubs that foster inclusion and focus on the minority experience at NC State. Our Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity ensures opportunity and strengthens relationships among diverse groups.

Created by the Morrill Act of 1862, NC State is a land-grant institution with a greater purpose to serve the state of North Carolina. We tackle tough problems through research, ingenuity and hard work, and develop real solutions that improve lives in our state and beyond.

When you come here, you’re part of something bigger — a public university with a long tradition of creating societal, intellectual and economic prosperity.
